Supplications before reading Qur’an
For non-Arabic speakers, it can be frustrating not to read the Qur’an in its beautiful, original form. You can read the translation of the meaning of the Qur’an. You can try to sound the words out with transliteration. But how would you know if you were pronouncing them correctly in English?
Compulsory Supplications before reading Qur’an
1. Seek Refuge in Allah
Allah says in the Qur’an
فَإِذَا
قَرَأْتَ
الْقُرْآنَ
فَاسْتَعِذْ
بِاللّهِ مِنَ
الشَّيْطَانِ
الرَّجِيمِ
“When you read the Qur’an, seek refuge in Allah from Shaitaan, the accursed one." (An-Nahl-16:98)
Therefore, when one start reading the Qur’an, we must say
اَعُوذُبِاللّهِ
مِنَ
الشَّيْطَانِ
الرَّجِيم
“A’uudhu billahi minash shaitawnir rajeem”.
“I seek refuge in Allah from Shaitaan, the accursed one.”
Then one must start each reading with Bismillah
2. In the Name of Allah
بِسْمِ
اللهِ
الرَّحْمٰنِ
الرَّحِيْمِ
“Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem”.
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the most Merciful.
This is the first Ayah (verse) of the Qur’an.
Ar-Rahmaan and Ar-Raheem are two of Allah’s beautiful names.
Ar-Rahmaan means “the Most Gracious”.
Ar-Raheem means “the Most Merciful”.
Remember that Allah has ninety-nine names.
All the names of Allah are beautiful.
The Qur’an has one hundred and fourteen chapters or Surahs.
Every Surah of the Qur’an, except one begins with Bismillah.
Only Surah at-Tawbah (chapter-9) does not start with Bismillah.
In this surah Allah shows His anger against the Mushrikun.
