Lesson 25 : Independent Letters

Theare some surahs begin with some independent letters from the Arabic alphabet, which are attached to each other like ordinary words. The individual letters have to be pronounced by reading out their respective names.

If one removes the repetitive letters, then the number of letters mentioned at the beginning of the Surahs is fourteen: Alif, Lam, Mim, Sad, Ra, Kaf, Ha, Ya, `Ayn, Ta, Sin, Ha, Qaf, Nun.

The individual letters in the beginning of some Surahs are among those things whose knowledge Allah has kept only for Himself. This was reported from Abu Bakr, `Umar, `Uthman, `Ali and Ibn Mas`ud.

The length of each letters' prolongation will be determined by the Madd rule inherent within the spelling of it

The difference of the length of its prolongation is determined by the number of letters that are used to spell the name of that particular letter

So these madd can contain either three, two or one letter

Duaa at end of gathering

‘How perfect You are O Allah, and I praise You. I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except You. I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance.’
