You are here: BDIslam Home > Learn Quran > Lesson 23 : The Rules of Madd
Madd means to prolong the sound of a vowel. The minimum prolongation of a vowel is to the measure of two vowels (2 counts), which is equal to the measure of one alif.
There are two basic rules of Natural Madd
Rule # 1 :
If you see long fatha, long Kasra or long Dhamma any where in the Quran you must prolong the vowel sound for two counts.
Example :

For more practice please see Lesson 16, Lesson 18 and Lesson 20
If you see
a. Alif with no sign comes after Fathah ( بَا )( See Lesson 17 )
b. Ya Saakin comes after Kasrh ( اِىْ ) ( See Lesson 19 )
c. Wa Saakin comes after Dhammah ( اُوْ) ( See Lesson 21 )
any where in the Quran
you must prolong the vowel sound for two counts.
Example :

Note: ALL THE OTHER MADD ARE BUILT ON THIS BASIC / NATURAL MADD RULE, DEPENDING ON WHAT COMES AFTER IT
‘How perfect You are O Allah, and I praise You. I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except You. I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance.’
